10K Pace Calculator and Split Chart

Ten kilometers is 6.21 miles, and it is the distance where pace discipline starts to matter more than fitness. Enter your goal time below to get the per-kilometer pace that delivers it, along with the speed in km/h.

Total time

Your pace

5:00/km

Equals 12.0 km/h.

How we got this number

Pace = time ÷ distance = 25min ÷ 5 km = 5:00/km

Worked example: 10K in 50 minutes

Pace = time ÷ distance = 50:00 ÷ 10 km = 5:00/km = 8:03/mile = 12 km/h.

In US mile markers that is 8:03, 16:06, 24:09, 32:12, 40:15 and 48:18, leaving 1:42 for the final 0.21 mile. Note the trap in that list: the last marker arrives with almost two minutes of racing still to do, which is exactly where the clock math tempts people into a sprint they cannot afford.

Each 30 seconds of pace is worth five minutes of finish time here — double the leverage of the 5K, and the reason a small pacing error compounds into a large disappointment.

What a very large US data set says about the second half

The Bolder Boulder in Colorado has enough finishers to answer pacing questions statistically. A 2016 analysis in PeerJ pulled 191,693 performances from six editions of the race and compared each runner’s pace over the first 3 miles against the final 3.2 miles. The study set two thresholds: slowing by less than 5% counted as holding the pace, and slowing by 10% or more counted as marked slowing.

The headline finding was a sex difference — among the fastest sextile, women were roughly twice as likely as men to hold their pace, and about half as likely to slow markedly. The authors point out what makes the result interesting: at 10 km, glycogen depletion is not usually the culprit, so what separates the two groups looks more like a decision at the start line than a limit in the legs.

The practical reading is unglamorous. Whatever pace the table above tells you, the first 3 miles should feel like you are holding something back, because the runners who hold their pace are the ones who did.

Before and after the 10K

If the 5K is your reference, the 5K pace calculator shows the pace you already know you can hold, and the gap between the two is personal enough that guessing it from a formula is worse than testing it in a race. After the 10K, the half marathon pace calculator is the next step, and the running pace calculator covers any distance in between.

One caution that applies to every number on this page: it only means something on a course USATF certified as actually 10,000 meters long.

Frequently asked questions

What pace do I need to run a 10K in 50 minutes?

5:00 per kilometer, or 8:03 per mile at 12 km/h. It is the same pace as a 25-minute 5K, held for twice as long — which is what makes it a genuinely harder race rather than a longer one.

Is a 10K in under an hour good?

A 60-minute 10K needs 6:00/km, or 9:39/mile, and it is the benchmark most recreational runners aim at after a few consistent months. Good is relative to your own history, but that line is the one people set.

How many miles is a 10K?

6.2137 miles. Race material rounds it to 6.2, and the mile markers on a US course fall at kilometers 1.61, 3.22, 4.83 and 6.44 — which is why watching both sets of signs is a good way to lose count.

How much slower is 10K pace than 5K pace?

For most runners it is a modest step down, not a different gear — the aerobic demand barely changes, the tolerance for it does. Race both within a few weeks and use your own gap rather than a formula.

How much do people slow down in the second half of a 10K?

In six years of the Bolder Boulder, researchers compared the first 3 miles against the final 3.2. They classed slowing under 5% as holding the pace and 10% or more as marked slowing — and the fastest men slowed more than the fastest women in both measures.
