24 Hour Fast Benefits — What Changes, What Doesn't

A 24-hour fast, sometimes sold as Eat Stop Eat, runs from one meal to the same meal the next day, usually once or twice a week. It is also the first schedule where the metabolic claims start to have something behind them. Enter your last meal time for the exact hour it ends.

How we got these times

The timeline, from a source that hedges

Fasting content loves an hour-by-hour infographic. The primary literature is less certain, and the disagreement is worth seeing.

StatPearls’ Physiology, Fasting chapter states that most glycogen sits in the liver, which has the greatest role in maintaining blood glucose during the first 24 hours of a fast, and that after about 24 hours glycogen stores are depleted, pushing the body toward adipose tissue and protein for energy. The current obesity-treatment chapter, updated in 2026, puts the same depletion at 42 hours.

Two StatPearls chapters, two numbers. What both agree on is the direction and the rough order of magnitude — and that it lands far past the end of a 16- or 18-hour fast. That is the single most useful thing to take from this page: if the metabolic shift is what you are after, the schedules that reach for it are the long ones, not 16/8.

What happens after depletion is a switch in fuel. Triglycerides in fat tissue break into free fatty acids and glycerol; the liver turns the fatty acids into ketone bodies and the glycerol into glucose. Gluconeogenesis runs alongside, producing glucose from amino acids — including amino acids drawn from muscle, which is the cost side of the ledger and the reason long fasts are not free.

What a weekly 24-hour fast actually buys

Skipping a day of meals removes a large slice of the week’s calories, and that deficit is the mechanism behind any weight change. Compensating on the other days removes it again. StatPearls’ verdict on fasting in general applies here too: once caloric restriction is accounted for, the independent contribution of the timing is limited.

What is fair to say is that a once-weekly fast is a low-admin way to run a weekly deficit for people who dislike daily tracking, and that adherence is a real advantage. What is not fair to say is that it burns fat in some way that eating the same calories across seven days does not.

Running one without wrecking the day

  • Hydration first. Water, plain coffee and unsweetened tea. Dehydration is one of the proposed causes of fasting headache, alongside hypoglycemia and caffeine withdrawal, and that headache is most likely early in a fasting habit.
  • Break it gently. An ordinary balanced meal, not a feast. See when to break my fast.
  • Stop if the body says stop. Strong dizziness, weakness or feeling unwell are reasons to eat. StatPearls goes further and advises that fasting be performed under physician supervision, ideally in a clinical setting.

Who should not do this one at all

A full day without food sharpens every risk that a short fast carries lightly. It is not for beginners, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for children and adolescents, or for anyone with a history of disordered eating.

The hard stop is medication. NIDDK lists fasting explicitly as a cause of low blood glucose in people who continue taking glucose-lowering drugs, and names insulin, sulfonylureas and meglitinides. A 24-hour fast on any of them is a clinical decision, not a personal one. The full list is on who should not do intermittent fasting.

Frequently asked questions

What are the benefits of a 24 hour fast?

The best-supported one is simply eating less across the week. Physiologically, 24 hours is roughly where liver glycogen runs out and the body shifts toward fat and protein for fuel, which shorter schedules never reach.

What is the 24 hour fast timeline?

StatPearls says the liver carries blood glucose through about the first 24 hours, and glycogen is depleted around that point, after which fat becomes the main fuel. A second chapter puts depletion nearer 42 hours, so treat any hour-by-hour chart with suspicion.

Is a 24 hour fast once a week worth doing?

It can cut a meaningful share of weekly calories, which is the mechanism behind any weight change. Eating more on the other days cancels it, and no trial shows a benefit beyond the deficit it creates.

Is it safe to go 24 hours without food?

For a healthy, adapted adult an occasional 24-hour fast is usually tolerated, but StatPearls advises that fasting be done under physician supervision, and notes data on underweight, older and pediatric patients is lacking.

Can I drink anything during a 24 hour fast?

Water, plain coffee and unsweetened tea contain no calories and are the standard allowances. Hydration matters more on a long fast than a short one, and dehydration is one of the proposed causes of fasting headache.
