Age Difference Calculator — Gap Between Two Birthdays
The age difference between two people is the span between their birth dates, and nothing else feeds into it — not today’s date, not either person’s current age. Enter both birth dates below to see the gap in years, months and days.

A gap that never grows
People often say a difference “gets bigger with time,” but the arithmetic says otherwise. A person born on March 3, 2015 and a person born on May 5, 2020 are separated by 5 years, 2 months and 2 days — this year, next year and half a century from now. Both clocks run at the same speed, so the distance between the two starting points is frozen.
What does change is each person’s own age, which is what the age calculator reports.
The same gap, weighed differently
If the number is fixed, why does a five-year difference feel enormous between a kindergartner and a newborn and nearly invisible between two adults in their sixties? Because a fixed quantity compared against a growing one shrinks as a proportion.
| Older person | Younger person | Gap as a share of the younger age |
|---|---|---|
| 5 years | 0 years | undefined — one has barely started |
| 15 years | 10 years | 50% |
| 30 years | 25 years | 20% |
| 65 years | 60 years | 8% |
Five years is five years in every row. Only the ratio moves, and that ratio is what intuition is actually reacting to.
Getting the order right
The tool reads the first date as the start of an interval and the second as its end, so the earlier birth date belongs in the top box. Reverse them and you are asking for a negative span, which the calculator refuses rather than silently flipping.
That start-to-end logic is the same one used for any two dates; the only difference here is that both endpoints happen to be births.
Where the number is actually used
Beyond curiosity about couples, an exact gap shows up in ordinary paperwork. Families comparing siblings against school entry cutoffs need months, not years. Genealogists reconstructing a household from census records use gaps between births to test whether a transcription is plausible. Twin and multiple-birth records are separated by minutes, but the same interval math applies once you move to full dates.
This page performs date arithmetic only. It makes no judgment about relationships and returns no advice — just the interval between two calendar days.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate the age difference between two people?
Measure the span between the two birth dates. Today's date plays no part in it. The calculator counts that span in whole years, then months, then days, using the real calendar.
Does an age gap get bigger over time?
No. Both people age at the same rate, so a gap of 5 years and 2 months stays 5 years and 2 months forever. What changes is how large that fixed gap looks next to the ages themselves.
Which birth date goes in the first box?
The older one. Put the earlier birth date first and the later one second; if you reverse them the calculator flags it so you can swap the fields.
Can I use it for siblings born in the same year?
Yes. Two dates a few months apart return a gap in months and days rather than years, which is the reading school cutoffs and pediatric charts care about.
Do I need to know both exact birth dates?
Yes, for a gap in days. If you only have birth years, the difference could be off by nearly a year in either direction, because the months and days decide the rest.
