Body Fat Percentage for Men: Calculator and Ranges
The healthy band for men runs from about 10 to 22 percent. The calculator below is already set to the male adjustment — enter weight, height and age, and read the result against the two references that follow.

How we got this number
The male reference band
From the National Athletic Trainers’ Association position statement in the Journal of Athletic Training: healthy body fat for men is 10 to 22 percent, the adult low reference is 5 percent, and essential fat — the lipid inside bone marrow, the nervous system and the organs — averages about 3 percent of body mass.
Three percent is a genuinely small reserve, and it is why the male band starts so much lower than the female one. Women carry roughly 12 percent as essential tissue. The same reading means different things in the two bodies: 20 percent is unremarkable in a man and lean in a woman.
Where American men actually measure
DXA scans from NHANES 1999–2006, covering 11,884 males, put the mean for adult American men at 27.8 percent. The healthy ceiling is 22.
That five-point gap is the honest context for your result. Landing at 24 percent puts you above the recommended band and below the national mean at the same time — both statements are true, and only one of them is a health claim.
There is a third reference worth knowing, because it is the strictest one applied to civilians’ peers. Congressional Research Service reports that the Department of Defense allows body fat between 18 and 26 percent for men, with each service picking its own value inside that range. The military does not treat 27.8 percent as normal for a working adult male.
The abs threshold and what it costs
The secondary search is always the same, so here is the direct answer: visible abdominal definition in most men arrives between 10 and 12 percent, moving a few points either way with where you personally store fat.
Notice that this range sits inside the healthy band rather than below it. Abs are not a medical transgression for men in the way that comparable leanness is for women. What they are is expensive to maintain — the calorie deficit required to reach 10 percent is not the deficit required to sit there for a year, and most men who get there discover the second part is the hard one.
Single digits are a different matter. That is competition territory, held for weeks, and the distance between a stage peak and suppressed testosterone, flattened energy and blunted immune response is short.
If you lift, this estimate is wrong
The formula behind the calculator starts from BMI, and BMI cannot tell dense muscle from fat. A man carrying substantial muscle typically reads four to six points too high here.
The fix is to measure circumferences instead of inferring from weight. The Navy body fat calculator uses neck, waist and height and is the better instrument for a trained build. For a properly measured caliper assessment and why it needs a second person, see the skinfold body fat calculator. The general method behind the estimate above, and its four-point standard error, is explained on the body fat percentage calculator, and the way the healthy band drifts across the decades in ideal body fat percentage by age.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good body fat percentage for a man?
American athletic trainers put the healthy band at 10 to 22 percent, with 5 percent as the adult low reference. Below that band the concern is hormonal rather than cosmetic, and above it the useful next measurement is your waist.
At what point do abs become visible?
Usually somewhere between 10 and 12 percent, though genetics move it several points either way. That range sits at the bottom of the healthy band, not below it, which is why it is achievable without harm and hard to hold.
Is single-digit body fat sustainable?
For a season, with supervision, for a competitor. Not as a way of life. Essential fat in men averages about 3 percent of body mass, and the margin between a competition peak and impaired hormone function is thin.
Why does my bathroom scale disagree with this estimate?
They measure different things badly in different directions. Impedance scales infer fat from electrical resistance and drift with hydration; this formula infers it from BMI and drifts with muscle. Pick one and follow its trend.
