Chapped Lips Causes: Weather, Habits and Products
Lips have almost no oil glands, a thinner outer layer than the rest of the face and no pigment worth speaking of, so they lose water fast and burn easily. The American Academy of Dermatology names cold, dry weather, sun damage and frequent lip licking as the leading reasons they crack — and the fix depends entirely on which of those, or which of the less obvious causes below, is driving yours.
The lick-and-dry loop
Dry lips feel better wet, so licking them is reflexive. Then the saliva evaporates and carries moisture off with it, and the lips end up drier than they were. Biting and picking add mechanical injury on top and stop the skin from repairing. The AAD’s advice is to substitute rather than suppress: when you notice yourself licking, apply a non-irritating balm instead.
The product on your lips may be the cause
This is the one people rarely suspect, because the tingle reads as evidence that a product is working. It is not — it is irritation. While lips are chapped, the AAD says to stop using anything containing camphor, eucalyptus, fragrance, lanolin, menthol, phenol, propyl gallate, salicylic acid, octinoxate or oxybenzone, and to be especially careful with cinnamon, citrus, mint and peppermint flavoring. Fragrance-free and hypoallergenic are the labels to look for. Metal is a related and stranger culprit: the AAD warns against holding paperclips, jewelry and other metal objects with your lips.
Sun, wind and the part of the face nobody protects
Lip skin has little natural defense against ultraviolet light, and chapped lips burn more readily than intact ones — which can also trigger a cold sore. The AAD asks for a non-irritating balm with SPF 30 or higher containing titanium oxide or zinc oxide before going outdoors, in winter as much as in summer, reapplied every two hours while you are out.
Medication and medical causes
- Isotretinoin. Dry skin, chapped lips, dry eyes and nosebleeds are common on this acne medication; the AAD’s own guidance is petroleum jelly indoors through the day and before bed, SPF 30 balm outdoors. The dryness clears when the course ends.
- Nutritional deficiency. Iron, riboflavin, folate, cyanocobalamin and zinc, usually presenting at the corners of the mouth rather than across the lips.
- Dry mouth. Reduced saliva from medication, Sjögren syndrome or breathing through the mouth dries the perioral area too; see dry mouth causes.
- An allergic reaction or a yeast infection, both of which the AAD lists as reasons lips stay uncomfortable when weather alone would not explain it.
When it is a different diagnosis
Cracks concentrated at the two corners of the mouth are not general dryness — they are angular cheilitis, which usually involves Candida or Staphylococcus and does not respond to balm alone. The comparison is laid out in chapped lips vs angular cheilitis. Persistent dry, scaly lips in someone with years of sun exposure can also be actinic cheilitis, a precancerous condition the AAD names specifically as a reason to see a dermatologist when self-care fails.
What to do next
Most cases improve within two to three weeks of consistent, non-irritating care — the routine is in how to treat chapped lips. If yours are worst between November and March, chapped lips in winter covers the seasonal mechanics.

Frequently asked questions
Why does licking make it worse instead of better?
Because the relief is temporary and the cost is not. The American Academy of Dermatology explains that as saliva evaporates it takes moisture with it, leaving the lips drier than before you licked them. The habit is self-reinforcing, which is why dermatologists treat breaking it as part of the treatment.
Can a vitamin deficiency dry out my lips?
It can, though it is far from the usual explanation, and it tends to show up at the corners rather than across the whole lip. StatPearls reports that up to 25% of angular cheilitis cases are associated with iron or B-vitamin deficiency, with riboflavin, folate, cyanocobalamin and zinc the ones named.
Is my lip balm the problem?
Possibly. The AAD lists camphor, menthol, eucalyptus, fragrance, lanolin, salicylic acid, phenol, propyl gallate, octinoxate, oxybenzone and cinnamon, citrus, mint or peppermint flavoring as ingredients to stop using while lips are chapped. Burning or tingling is irritation, not a product working.
Why do my lips chap in summer as well?
Sun and wind do to lips what cold does, and dry lips burn more easily. Air conditioning lowers indoor humidity the same way heating does in winter, and people drink less than they think in the heat. The AAD asks for SPF 30 or higher on the lips before going outdoors, reapplied every two hours.
