Inches to Cm — For Forms, Charts and Screeners

One inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters — not a rounded figure but a definition, set by the international agreement of 1959 that NIST records in Handbook 44. Multiply inches by 2.54 and the answer is as accurate as the measurement you started from.

Why something is asking you for centimeters

You measured with an American tape and now a form wants metric. That happens in a small number of specific places, and they have something in common: each one runs your measurement into a formula or a cutoff that was built in centimeters.

  • Intake forms and medical records outside the US, and many research questionnaires.
  • Growth charts for children, which are plotted in centimeters and kilograms.
  • Body surface area, used for chemotherapy and burn dosing, whose Mosteller formula takes height in centimeters directly.
  • Screening questionnaires with a fixed metric threshold. The sleep apnea screener used on the sleep apnea risk calculator asks whether your neck measures more than 40 cm, printed on the American form as “16 in.”

That last one shows what is at stake. 40 cm is 15.75 in, so the American version rounds up by a quarter inch. Measure 15.9 in and you are under 16 but over 40 cm — the questionnaire scores you one way in inches and the other way in centimeters.

The quarter inch that costs a centimeter

Because an inch is 2.54 cm, small sloppiness on the imperial side is magnified on the metric one. Rounding a waist of 34.6 in to “35” adds a centimeter. Rounding a height of 68.4 in to “68” removes one. Neither feels like a real change while you are writing it down.

The rule that fixes it is simple: measure to the nearest quarter inch, convert from that, and round the centimeters at the end. A quarter inch is 0.635 cm, so the worst you can be off is about three millimeters, which is genuinely below what a tape measure around a soft body can resolve.

Tape technique matters more than any of this arithmetic. For a waist, the tape sits level, snug without compressing, and the reading is taken at the end of a normal breath out. Getting that wrong moves the number by far more than a rounding choice does.

Going the other way

If the number you have is already metric and you want it in inches — a foreign record, a research threshold — the cm to inches converter runs the same definition backwards and explains why the American and metric waist cutoffs disagree by about a centimeter.

For height specifically, feet and inches to meters skips the two-step conversion, and pounds to kg handles the weight that usually travels with it.

Frequently asked questions

How many centimeters is one inch?

Exactly 2.54 cm. It follows from the 1959 international agreement that fixed the yard at exactly 0.9144 m, which NIST records in Handbook 44.

What is 5 inches in centimeters?

12.7 cm. Twelve inches, one foot, is exactly 30.48 cm, and 36 inches — a yard — is exactly 91.44 cm.

Should I round to the nearest inch first?

No. Round at the end. An inch is 2.54 cm, so rounding your measurement to the nearest whole inch can shift the metric answer by more than a centimeter, which is larger than most of the differences the number is being used to detect.

Is the inch the same in the UK and the US?

Yes for everyday and medical purposes. The 1959 agreement made the inch identical across the English-speaking countries. Only the US survey foot, kept for legacy land surveying, differs, and it differs by two parts per million.
