Keto Macro Calculator — Carb Limit in Real Grams

Keto is defined by a ceiling, not a percentage. Clinical protocols cap carbohydrate at 20 to 50 grams a day, with fat supplying 60 to 75 percent of calories. On a 2,000-calorie plan the 5 percent carbohydrate share below comes to 25 grams. Enter your calories:

Your daily macros

  • Protein 150 g (600 kcal)
  • Carbs 200 g (800 kcal)
  • Fat 67 g (600 kcal)
How we got these numbers

Twenty-five grams, in food

The number only becomes real when you spend it. Twenty-five grams of carbohydrate is roughly one medium banana, or a single slice and a half of sandwich bread, or a cup of cooked rice with a third left on the plate. It is not a day’s worth of anything — it is one item, once.

That is why keto menus look the way they do. A clinical sample day for the very-low-carbohydrate version runs eggs with spinach and avocado at breakfast, macadamias as a snack, and roast chicken with broccoli and cauliflower cooked in butter at dinner, totalling 20 to 25 g of net carbs. Vegetables stay, but only the ones that cost almost nothing: leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables, olives.

Three ketos, three different ceilings

“Keto” names a family, and the versions are not interchangeable:

VersionTypical useCarbohydrate
Classic 4:1 ratioDrug-resistant epilepsy, usually in childrenabout 4% of calories, ~90% from fat
Modified AtkinsAdolescents and adults with epilepsyusually under 20 g a day
Very-low-carbohydrateObesity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome20 to 50 g a day

Only the first has broad guideline support, and only for epilepsy and a couple of rare metabolic syndromes. Everything else — weight, diabetes, fatty liver, neurodegenerative disease — is still described as investigational in the clinical literature, however confident the marketing sounds.

Protein is capped, and that surprises people

A high-fat diet is not a high-protein diet. Clinical protocols hold protein at roughly 1 to 1.5 g per kilogram of ideal body weight, which for someone whose ideal weight is 154 lb (70 kg) is 70 to 105 g a day. The reason is arithmetic before it is physiology: fat has to occupy 60 to 75 percent of calories, and carbohydrate is already spoken for, so protein gets what remains.

Note also where this leaves the federal ranges. Carbohydrate at 5 percent sits far under the 45 percent floor of the Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range, and fat at 70 percent sits double the 35 percent ceiling. Keto is outside the box the National Academies drew, deliberately.

The part to read before starting

Ketogenic diets are contraindicated in acute or chronic pancreatitis, liver failure, disorders of fat metabolism, porphyrias and pyruvate kinase deficiency, and are not recommended during pregnancy. Anyone on insulin or a sulfonylurea needs medication adjustment and monitoring; anyone on an SGLT2 inhibitor should avoid keto entirely, because the combination can produce diabetic ketoacidosis at normal blood glucose. There is also a documented pattern of raised LDL cholesterol, which is why lipid guidance for these diets steers toward olive oil, nuts and fatty fish rather than butter.

Discontinuation rates are high even among people whose metabolic markers improve. A less restrictive low carb split keeps most of the effect with a carb budget you can eat in public. To see the arithmetic on the carbohydrate line by itself, use the daily carb calculator, and for the standard three-way split, the macro calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How many carbs can I eat on keto?

The version used for weight and metabolic health caps carbohydrate at 20 to 50 grams a day. Below roughly that threshold insulin falls far enough to push the liver into producing ketone bodies.

What are keto macros in percentages?

Clinical descriptions put it near 55 to 60 percent fat, 30 to 35 percent protein and 5 to 10 percent carbohydrate. The very-low-carbohydrate version used for obesity is closer to 60 to 75 percent fat with a fixed gram cap on carbs.

Why is protein only moderate on keto?

Clinical protocols set it around 1 to 1.5 grams per kilogram of ideal body weight and no higher, because the priority is keeping the calorie share available for fat while holding ketone production steady.

Who should avoid a ketogenic diet?

It is contraindicated in pancreatitis, liver failure, fat-metabolism disorders such as carnitine deficiency, porphyrias and pyruvate kinase deficiency, is not recommended in pregnancy, and is risky for anyone on insulin or SGLT2 inhibitors.
