Liters to Glasses of Water — Instant Converter

A 200 mL glass goes into a liter five times, so 1 liter is 5 glasses and 2 liters is 10. Type liters or glasses below and both sides update at once.

2 liters equal 10 glasses of 200 mL.

The conversion table

LitersGlasses of 200 mLUS cups (8 fl oz)Fluid ounces
0.5 L2.52.117
1 L54.234
1.5 L7.56.351
2 L108.568
2.5 L12.510.685
3 L1512.7101
3.5 L17.514.8118

Note the bottom rows. 3 liters is 101 fl oz, which is exactly the Adequate Intake for beverages that the Institute of Medicine published for adult men. The 2.2 L beverage figure for women is 74 fl oz, or 11 glasses of 200 mL.

Two glass sizes, one confusion

The word “glass” carries two different volumes in American kitchens.

  • The US measuring cup is defined as 8 fluid ounces — 237 mL. It is the unit the IOM used when it converted its reference values into cups.
  • The 200 mL table glass is the everyday drinking glass this converter counts.

The gap is about 37 mL, or 15%. Across a day it is worth roughly two glasses, which is why a target quoted in “glasses” is always a little vague unless someone names the size.

The other containers in your cupboard vary at least as much:

  • Pint glass: 16 fl oz, 473 mL — 2.4 glasses of 200 mL.
  • Mug: usually 250 to 350 mL, sometimes far more.
  • 500 mL bottle: 2.5 glasses. A 1 L bottle: 5.
  • Standard water bottle (16.9 fl oz / 500 mL): also 2.5 glasses.

Why converting helps at all

Counting in liters is precise and hard to remember; counting in glasses is imprecise and easy. Most people track better when the unit is something they physically pick up. Converting once — turning “2.45 liters” into “12 glasses” or “three refills of my 24 oz bottle” — turns an abstraction into a countable list.

Spread them across the first two-thirds of the day. Glasses left for the evening tend to be traded for sleep rather than added to the total.

This converter does not set your target

It translates a number you already have. To find out what that number should be, size it to your body at how many liters of water a day, or get the answer directly in glasses at how many glasses of water a day. The reasoning behind both sits on the daily water intake calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How many glasses of water are in a liter?

Five glasses of 200 mL, or about 4.2 US measuring cups of 8 fl oz. Two liters is 10 glasses of 200 mL, or roughly 8.5 US cups.

How many glasses is 3 liters of water?

Fifteen glasses of 200 mL. In US cups of 8 fl oz it is about 12.7, and in fluid ounces about 101 — which is the IOM beverage reference for adult men.

How do I convert glasses back into liters?

Multiply the number of glasses by 200 and divide by 1,000. Eight glasses gives 1,600 mL, or 1.6 liters. The converter above runs the arithmetic in both directions at once.

Is a glass the same as a cup?

Not in this context. A US measuring cup is exactly 8 fluid ounces, or 237 mL. The 200 mL glass used here is a common table size and holds about 15% less.

My glass is not 200 mL. Does the conversion still work?

The liters do not change; only the count does. Measure your usual glass once with a measuring cup, and divide your target in millilitres by that figure to get your real number of refills.
