Walking Pace Calculator: Is Your Walk Brisk?
Walking pace is the same arithmetic as running pace — time divided by distance — but the number means something different, because there is a speed at which walking starts to count as exercise in the federal guidelines. Enter your distance and time below.
Your pace
5:00/km
Equals 12.0 km/h.
How we got this number
Pace = time ÷ distance = 25min ÷ 5 km = 5:00/km
Worked example: 3 km in 36 minutes
Pace = 36:00 ÷ 3 km = 12:00/km, which is 5 km/h, 3.11 mph and 19:19 per mile. In US terms, that is 1.86 miles covered in a little over half an hour.
That speed lands exactly on the threshold researchers now recommend — and comfortably inside the brisk band the guidelines describe.
The intensity bands, in every unit that matters
The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, 2nd edition, define intensity by energy cost: light is under 3.0 METs, moderate is 3.0 to 5.9, and vigorous is 6.0 or more. The walking speeds that go with each band are spelled out under “absolute intensity” in the Glossary, page 105, and that is the page to check them against:
| Intensity | Speed | Pace (min/mile) | Pace (min/km) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light — slow or leisurely | 2 mph or less (3.2 km/h) | slower than 30:00 | slower than 18:38 |
| Moderate — walking briskly | 2.5 to 4 mph (4.0 to 6.4 km/h) | 24:00 to 15:00 | 14:55 to 9:19 |
| Vigorous — walking very fast | 4.5 to 5 mph (7.2 to 8.0 km/h) | 13:20 to 12:00 | 8:17 to 7:27 |
Read the vigorous row twice. Walking very fast is not a milder version of jogging in this scheme — at 4.5 mph it is already in the same intensity class as running, which is why a genuinely fast walker meets the weekly target in half the minutes.
Where the 2.5 mph floor gets argued with
The 2.5 mph figure comes from the Compendium of Physical Activities, and a 2022 study in the Journal of Sports Sciences tested it directly. Researchers had 248 healthy adults aged 21 to 85 walk overground at a self-selected pace on an instrumented gait mat while their oxygen uptake was measured. The speed that actually corresponded to 3 METs was about 1.29 m/s — roughly 4.6 km/h, or 2.9 mph — and it barely moved between the young, middle-aged and older groups.
Their practical conclusion was that a heuristic of 3 mph or 5 km/h balanced sensitivity and specificity better than the traditional 2.5 mph. So if you want one number to walk by rather than a range: three miles an hour, or a 20-minute mile.
How much, and what comes next
For substantial health benefits, the guidelines ask adults for at least 150 to 300 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity — 30 to 60 minutes of brisk walking on five days covers it — or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity.
To convert any walking speed you already know into a pace without doing the division, use the pace to km/h converter. If your walk has quietly turned into a run, the running pace calculator has the race distances, and the negative split calculator covers how to distribute effort over a long route. To judge the effort by pulse instead of speed, the heart rate zone calculator works from the other direction.

Frequently asked questions
What speed counts as brisk walking?
The federal Physical Activity Guidelines list walking briskly at 2.5 to 4 mph (4.0 to 6.4 km/h) as moderate-intensity activity. In pace terms that is roughly 24:00 to 15:00 per mile, or 14:55 to 9:19 per kilometer.
Is 3 mph fast enough to count as exercise?
Yes, and a 2022 study of 248 adults aged 21 to 85 argues it is the better rule. Walking at 3 mph or 5 km/h classified moderate intensity more accurately than the older 2.5 mph threshold, across every age group tested.
How do I calculate walking pace?
The same way as running pace: total time divided by distance. Three kilometers in 36 minutes is 12:00 per kilometer, which is 5 km/h, 3.11 mph and 19:19 per mile.
How much brisk walking should I do per week?
The guidelines call for at least 150 to 300 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity for substantial health benefits, or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous. Brisk walking is the example they give for moderate.
At what point does walking become running?
Around 4.5 to 5 mph the guidelines already reclassify walking as vigorous, and most people break into a jog somewhere in there. Below about 8:00 per kilometer, whatever you call it, you are running.
